Detecting a Gas Leak

  • Smell

Natural gas smells like rotten eggs because of a sulfur-based odorant that is added so it can be identified.

  • see

Grass or plants close to the leak die off, turning blackish green. Your gas bill rises because gas is escaping from the system.

  • Listen

Listen for hissing or high pitched whistling, especially near a gas line or an appliance that uses gas.
